Metro station Kurskaya in Moscow, Russia opened in 1950, and is a fine example of Stalinist architecture of the post-war period. Unlike many of Moscow's grand metro stations, Kurskaya contains no sculptures or artworks. Instead, its elegant design relies on refined architectural details, including decorative torchieres illuminating the granite stairways and concealed lighting within the vaulted ceiling. A bronze frieze running along the vault symbolizes the dawn and flourishing of Mother Russia, giving the station its distinctive and harmonious character.
