Metro station Novokuznetskaya in Moscow, Russia opened in 1943, at the height of World War II and was completed on schedule despite the enormous challenges of the time. Built with luxurious materials and elaborate ornamentation, the station pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Soviet soldiers during the war. One of its enduring legends claims that the station’s ornate marble benches were crafted from Carrara marble salvaged from the demolished Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Today, Novokuznetskaya is regarded as one of the Moscow Metro’s most remarkable wartime architectural achievements.
